Business Affairs and Licenses

Brooklyn Community Board 6 reviews applications for new on-premises liquor licenses, and for altering or upgrading an existing on-premises license. CB6’s Business Affairs & Licenses Committee reviews these applications. CB6 does not review renewals; for a renewal, send the State Liquor Authority’s 30-day renewal notice.

1. Send the 30-day notice

• The State Liquor Authority (SLA) requires you to notify the community board before you submit an on-premises application. Use the SLA’s 30-day notice form.
• Send it to CB6 at 250 Baltic Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201 by certified mail return receipt requested, overnight mail with a tracking number, or personal delivery with proof of receipt.

2. Get on the agenda

• Once CB6 has your 30-day notice, Liza Santiago-Sierra, CB6’s Office Manager, will email you an invitation to a Business Affairs & Licenses Committee meeting.
• Reply to confirm you got it, and say whether you will attend or want to be moved to the next month’s meeting.
• Say what you are applying for by finishing this sentence: “To review a new liquor license application (or an upgrade or alteration of an existing license) for [address] between [cross street] and [cross street].” Include your trade name and LLC name.

3. Fill out the questionnaire

• Fill out the CB6 Liquor License Application Questionnaire and email it to [email protected] by the deadline you are given.
• Attach whatever applies: a map of the area, a menu, a floor plan, the Department of Buildings Certificate of Occupancy or Letter of No Objection, a proposed sidewalk café plan, and the Department of Buildings approval for use of outdoor space.

4. Post the public notice

• CB6 will send you the public meeting notice.
• Print it in color on white paper, so the red lettering pops, and post it on the door of the establishment.
• Post it, also in color on white paper, on the light posts at both corners of the block. Weatherproof each one with lamination or a plastic sleeve, tape it securely, and leave it up through the meeting.
• Give a copy to each neighbor on the block. These can be black and white, left at the door or with a resident.
• Email photos of the posted notices to [email protected] by the deadline you are given, and bring a sample of the notice and a signed Notification Certification form to the meeting.

5. The meeting

• Business Affairs & Licenses Committee meetings are in person at 250 Baltic Street at 6:30 PM. The applicant or a representative must attend.
• The committee makes a recommendation, and it goes to the Full Board for a vote. CB6’s resolution is sent to the SLA.
