SUMMARY:FREE Walk-Up Paddling - 2nd St.
DESCRIPTION:Hop into a Gowanus Dredgers canoe and paddle at your own pace inside the protected Gowanus Canal. Enjoy discovering the canal’s unique mix of wildlife and urban waterway infrastructure\, practice your paddling skills\, or take a guided audio tour and learn more about the history\, cleanup and revitalization of our favorite urban waterway. We’ll outfit you with a life jacket (which must be worn at all times) and paddle\, offer some basic instruction on how to paddle and safety tips on how to use a canoe\, and help you set off on your own self-guided journey. Trips may be limited to 20 minutes if there’s a crowd — but usually we just expect you to return to the dock 15 min. prior to closing. Who can participate? Paddling is for everyone! Free walk-up canoeing is open to all ages. Groups\, families\, solo paddlers\, and intrepid first dates are all welcome! Minors require a guardian’s signature to participate\, and all participants must sign a waiver. What should I wear? Dress for the weather: wear sunscreen\, hats\, and bring a water bottle — and bring layers if there’s a breeze! Close-toed shoes are recommended\, and wear clothing you don’t mind potentially being splashed. Is it really free? Yes! But donations are encouraged to help us continue offering these and other programs. Can I volunteer? Yes! You can sign up to volunteer here. No prior experience is required\, but we love return volunteers! Note: Volunteer shifts run from 30-minutes before the start of the program through the first two hours\, or from the middle of the program to 30 minutes after the end of the scheduled time.

SUMMARY:A Persistence of Cormorants Poetry Reading
DESCRIPTION:A Persistence of Cormorants is a summer-long poetry reading series on our shoreline featuring accomplished and exceptional poets from the New York area\, many of who live in Brooklyn. On each of the scheduled Sundays\, from 1:30 to 3:30\, up to four featured poets will read for 10 to 15 minutes each. Gerry reads poetry at the canal The readings will be followed by open mic time limited to ten readers (one poem no longer than 3 minutes) who have signed up the day of the reading on a first come basis. Reading will be outdoors at the Gowanus open shoreline and we invite you to engage with the emerging Gowanus Canal habitat as we witness the EPA conduct their SuperFUN/d cleanup program. Event may move to inside the boathouse if it begins to rain or we want to escape the summer heat. If other activity is occurring on the street or esplanade\, event may move inside. Participation is free but we encourage donations to sustain the efforts of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club\, an advocacy stewardship organization who has been representing neighborhood interests for over two decades. SUMMARY:Exhibit: The Shirley Chisholm Way: Brooklyn's Blueprint for Change
DESCRIPTION:Join Prospect Park Alliance and Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute (SCCI) for a new exhibit that explores how Brooklyn’s beloved daughter broke down gender and racial barriers to fight for her community\, becoming the first Black woman elected to Congress. The exhibit is organized around seven life lessons drawn from Chisholm’s tenacious career. It features stunning portraits of Chisholm by artist Al Johnson and rarely seen photographs and memorabilia from the Congresswoman’s campaigns\, curated by Barbara Bullard\, Creative Producer and President of SCCI. These materials offer inspirational insights into how Brooklyn’s beloved daughter broke down gender and racial barriers to become the first Black woman to serve in Congress. This exhibit provides visitors with a space to reflect on Chisholm’s legacy as Prospect Park Alliance welcomes the installation of a new monument in her honor at the Parkside and Ocean Avenue entrance in 2027. The exhibit\, curated by Barbara Bullard\, Cultural Producer and President of the Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute\, is part of Prospect Park Alliance’s ReImagine Lefferts initiative\, which is transforming the museum to explore the legacies of resistance and resilience of the Indigenous people of Lenapehoking\, whose unceded ancestral lands the park and house rests upon\, and Africans who were enslaved by the Lefferts family. The Shirley Chisholm Cultural Institute (SCCI) has been at the forefront of art\, culture\, and justice and economic sustainability since 1977\, with the official permission and participation of Congresswoman Chisholm herself in its inception and development. Its purpose is to preserve the legacy of Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm through the initiatives cultivated during her public service career with 21st century activism and innovation. SCCI is aligned with grassroots groups and frontline communities through creating substantive community-based partnership and collaboration along with strategic interoperative relationships with leaders of governmental\, and mainstream organizations.

SUMMARY:Nitehawk: Ghosts of Mars — 35mm Screenings
DESCRIPTION:Starring: Natasha Henstridge\, Ice Cube\, Pam Grier\, Jason Statham\, Clea DuVall\, Joanna Cassidy The Deuce doing matinees? Those keeping-you-in-a-seat-til- your-butt’s-numb numbskulls think they can keep you awake for a might-as-well-be a break of dawn show? Certainly! For there is no nodding off when you’re being constantly creeped by THE GHOSTS OF MARS!! Ghosts!! Not just on – but OF – Mars!! A menace of “Mod-Prim” marauding maniacs on parade in Carpenter’s penultimate full feature and final film to garner a “wide” general release… A rollicking throw-back to matinee movie making mayhem where meager means are made the most of in the most creative of cinematic genre cobbling and serial-style storytelling… GHOSTS OF MARS screams to be seen either mid-day or mid-night – and with The Deuce!! “ Wait! ” you say… and you continue\, “… isn’t 2001 a bit late for The Deuce?? ” – as you would be correct with such a question… as – yes! – the Deuce was way dead by 2001!! But! Alas! The Deuce-Dimwits are delivering this delicious matinee morsel to you via the by-then-decrepit-near-derelict Astoria Theatre – where at the time a certain Deuce-Dummy did in the neighborhood reside and relished the afternoons at said theater – and relishing most making the matinee show of GHOSTS OF MARS mere months before the shuttering of its screen… (Directed by John Carpenter\, 2001\, 98 min.\, 35mm\, Rated R.)
